Game # 12 - Feb 19/17 - Terry's Independent @ Parry Sound Shamrocks
On February 19th, 2019, the team travelled to Humphrey for a rematch against the Parry Sound Shamrocks.  This is the second time that we were playing the Shamrocks.  While we handily won the first game early in the season, no one knows what a rematch will bring.

The first ½ of the first period was intense.  Both teams were on their game and neither were able to penetrate the net.  Grayson C. though had the first solid shot on net and then a few minutes later, followed it up with a second one.  Joshua D. made a great shot through the congestion in front of the net but the puck just dinged off the goal post….oh that was close!

Colton H. was like a brick wall on defence, never letting the puck get by. A scrum in front of the net had all players trying to poke it in but then Hudson W. got the rebound and made another solid shot on net.  Finally, at 5:10, Jack McG. picked up a pass from Phenix C. and Hudson W. and scored on a breakaway, slamming it in to get that first goal of the game on the scoreboard and to take the early lead.  Grayden Z. was nicely placed in front of their net and picked up a few passes to try his shots on net.   Our goalie for the first two periods, Oliver H., was quick in net and had his eye on the game.  He made a great save early on and kept on top of the puck throughout.  Finally, with only 21 seconds left to play, Jack G. made a great interception and immediately flipped it to Phenix C., who took the shot from in front of the net and belted in our second goal of the night, to end the first period with us up 2 – 0.

The team exploded in the second period, scoring 7 goals in total.  Within the first minute of play, Jack McG. made a solid pass to Grayson C, who flipped it to Hudson W. and he banged it in to up our lead by 3.   Less than a minute later, Mason W., assisted by Oliver A. and Wyatt G. slammed in his first goal of the night to widen our lead to 4.  Less than 10 seconds later, Mason W. after winning the face off, carried it down and potted in another one to up the score to 6 – 0.  The next few minutes went by and each team battled hard.  While much of the play was in their end, Oliver H., our goalie for the first two periods, was ready for action and deflected a pivotal scoring opportunity.  At the ½ way point in the period, Joshua D. carried the puck down the ice, deked past a few Shamrock players to make a solid shot on net; it deflected and got picked up by Oliver A., who tipped it to Grayson C. who slammed it in for a great team goal.  Just 10 seconds later, Mason W., assisted by Jack McG., potted in another one, so the score was now sitting at 8 – 0.  With three minutes left to play, Joshua D. slammed in his first goal of the night, assisted by Jack McG. and Mason W.  Then, with a mere 16 seconds left to play, Jack McG, assisted by Mason W. got his third goal of the night to end the second period up  9 -.0.

The third period also saw lots of action.  Within the first couple of minutes of play, Evan A. assisted by Hudson W., flipped one in to score his first goal of the night.  Then, a minute later, Mason W. heaved in another one, to up the score to 11 – 0.   The next few minutes of play saw the team dominate the puck; Hudson W. and Wyatt G. peppered the net with shots on goal.   The Shamrock team should be credited, however, with still battling hard and not giving up.  Their perseverance paid off and at 7:58, they scored their first goal of the night to get on the scoreboard.   Colton H. was on the defensive and hustled hard to send the play back down to their end; he slammed it up the boards and passed well in this period.  Oliver A., Jack G. and Wyatt G. were all over the Shamrocks, constantly battling for the puck, both offensively and defensively.  We battled back and at 6:12, Jack McG. scored his third goal of the night, carrying the puck down the ice to make a fantastic goal, earning him credit for the infamous “hat trick” and upping the score to 12 – 1.    Then, approximately one minute later, Hudson W, assisted by Phenix C. and Jack McG. netted another goal.  Kallum G. was in net for the third period and while play was mainly in their end, he stayed quick on his feet and in tune with the game.   With only one second left to play, Mason W., assisted by Grayden Z. scored the final goal, to take the game 14 – 1; ironically, the same score that we had in the last game against the Shamrocks.

This game had our team exhibiting great teamwork and sportsmanship.  There was more passing then ever before; the players were making great choices about whether to take the shot or give it to someone with a better scoring opportunity; and they were keeping their heads up and their sticks down!  While, once again, we won handily against the Shamrocks, that team kept playing right until the end and never gave up, making us work right until the end for the win.  On that note we should be very proud of our team for exhibiting   true sportsmanship throughout the game, especially as the scoreboard inched upwards.
