Thought I would say a few words......
President’s Message Oct 16th, 2020
Hello Bear Families,
My name is Sarah Geer and I am your new President for South Muskoka Minor Hockey Association. I am excited to start this journey with you over the next two years and hope to bring an energetic, highly focused, organized and community centered presence within SMMHA.
A very long time ago before children, my father in law remembers me saying that I would never become a hockey mom….well, after having 3 boys with my husband Jeremy, I have lived and breathed hockey for the last 8 years as they have grown up with SMMHA since they were Cubs. I have enjoyed every second watching the boys learn how to skate and play. Since we are not able to step into an arena, I miss watching the boys as well the sounds of the skates on the ice and dare I even say the smell. Do I play hockey, you ask? Nope! My kids and husband skate circles around me! But I feel I don’t need to be a great hockey player in order to lead our association.
Before I became a teacher, I earned an Honours degree in Recreation and Leisure studies. I studied a variety of courses including sports and business management. Out of school, I was the sole creator of a very successful recreation program at a local resort. I created, budgeted, advertised and managed children’s camps and waterfront programs with a staff of 20. Becoming a teacher, has allowed me to gain many skills such as being creative, highly organized and motivated to make things happen. I volunteered with SMMHA for two years as the Director of Volunteers and Off-Ice officials. My time then gave me the experience to understand how our association works and support the communities we work with.
By the end of the month, our board will be providing you with our 2020-2022 Game/Business Plan. This will be posted on the website. We are currently working on revisiting our Mission, Vision, Values and Strategic Objectives. Covid has definitely thrown everyone a curve ball and getting players on the ice has been tricky to say the least. But please, know we are committed to making sure that when they step on the ice, they can forget about it all, learn and have fun! The mental health of our youth should be at the forefront of everyone's minds and thanks to the volunteers, coaches and bench staff of 20/21, we are able to provide them an outlet for them to escape and shine.
I look forward to meeting many of you in some way whether virtually or in person. I also hope to get permission from the arenas to meet each team in person so the players can put a face to my name. I have always been a strong advocate for youth as well as the many volunteers who provide extra time in their busy days to make magic happen for our association. Let’s continue to be safe and responsible by completing our covid screenings before entering an arena, follow OMHA rules and guidelines in regards to ice practices and support one another through this difficult time.
