The A.W. Shier's Bears are 2015/2016 MPS Champions!
The A.W. Shier's Bears competed this past weekend in the MPS Championships in Port Carling. Game 1 Friday night saw the Bears take on Muskoka Rock. It was a back and forth game with the goalies from each side stealing the show. Bears goalie Elgin Guthrie stonewalled the Rock offence time and time again. Fraser Pharoah scored in the first with assists to Derek Somerville and Jacob Hammond to end the period in a 1-1 tie. After a scoreless 2nd, the Rock opened the 3rd with a quick goal. The Bears gaine a 5 on 3 advantage due to a couple Rock penalties with just over 6 minutes left. Bears defenceman Logan Babcock went coast to coast at the 6:40 mark and fired a shot top corner to tie the game. Regulation time ended in a 2-2 tie. After no scoring in the 4 on 4, 3 on 3, and 2 on 2 overtime, the Rock managed to score with just 50 seconds left in the 1 on 1 to win 3-2.
Game 2 and the Bears were in a must win against Parry Sound. After a scoreless first, Babcock opend the scoring just 90 seconds into the second with a nice set up by Jacob Hammond. Parry Sound tied it up a minute later. The Bears then tallied 3 more to end the 2nd with 2 goals by Carter Veitch and 1 by Pharoah. The boys put it away in the 3rd with goals by Veitch, for the hat trick and Pharoah with assists going to Dylan Shepp with 3, Hammond, Babcock,Derek Somerville and Josh Boomhour.
That put the team in the Championship against the undefeated Rock. The Rock came out flying and scored 2 quick goals in the first 4 minutes. The Bears dug deep and potted 4 of their own to end the first with a 4-1 lead. From there it was all Bears with the game ending in an 8-4 victory. Bears goals scored by Veitch and Schepp with 2 and Somerville, Pharoah, Hammond and Dylan Whipp potting singles. Assists went to Schepp with 2, Jake Loft, Veitch, Boomhour, Sommerville and Hammond.
