Early Bird Tourney!
This past weekend the Progressive Waste Solution Major Midgets travelled to Owen Sound for their first tourney of the year.
The team had been finalized only two days before so it was the first time the 'set' team was together. Our first game was with Caledon who proved to be a very fast and smooth skating team. They were a great test and the boys squeezed out a well deserved 3-2 win. The second game that Friday was against Ajax and in this high scoring affair, the Bears had to come from behind to win 7-4.
After a night's sleep where most of the team enjoyed the very best in Owen Sound accommodations at the Owen Sound Inn...Saturday saw 2 more games in the round-robin. First was the host Owen Sound and in a close game we lost 4-6. The loss however, didn't feel as bad as it might have since the boys had carried the play very well and just a little more puck-luck around the opposing net might have made a different outcome. Our final round-robin game was against our old rival Collingwood and it was a 'must-win' if we were to play again on Sunday. They did play well and banked a well deserved 4-2 win.
Sunday the team was in the semis against the only team they'd lost to. Owen Sound was a physically big team and it was an exciting 1-0 win for the boys and especially nice to knock off the home team!
Perhaps they'd given everything they had in the semi final after a very tiring 5 games, because against Caledon in the final, they didn't have that same winning edge. They played decently but it wasn't quite energetic enough against a very smooth skating team and we lost 1-4 with the 4th goal being an empty netter.
It was a great 1st test for the team going all the way to the championship final. Lots was learned, a great time was had by all with parents renewing friendships and getting to know new team families. It was a successful start to the season!
