Initiation Program (South Muskoka Minor Hockey Association)

PrintInitiation Program

Welcome to the IP, "Initiation/Learn to Play" program where the foundation of skill development in hockey begins.

The Initiation Program is Hockey Canada’s premiere ‘Learn to Play’ program and is the foundation of skills development for hockey in the OMHA.

The Hockey Canada Initiation Program is designed for players 4, 5 and 6 years old but is suitable for any entry level hockey player and clearly lays out how to get them started in hockey so that they will: have fun; learn skills, and develop confidence.

The program consists of four phases of instruction, designed for any entry-level hockey player, helping introduce the skills of skating, passing, puck control and shooting in a progressive, one-step-at-a-time manner.

Benefits of the Initiation Program include:

  • Fun for all participants

  • Age appropriate skill development

  • More puck touches

  • Maximum ice usage

  • Increased competition for all players

For those parents who wish to coach or manage in the minor hockey system, this is a perfect opportunity to get started and gain experience. You will also earn Volunteer credits to put towards registration.  If you are interested in being part of the IP team, please complete the on-line application on our website (IP and LL application) and sign up ASAP in order to reserve a spot. You need to also be accredited with the Respect in Sport: Activity Leader clinic and the Gender Identity and Expression clinic which can be taken on line through the OMHA website.  As well you must have an up to date VSS (police check) before being rostered to a team.  Course costs will be reimbursed by South Muskoka Minor Hockey upon completion.
