Player Development
At South Muskoka Minor Hockey Association (SMMHA), we emphasize comprehensive skill development to enhance our players' performance on the ice. As our Player Development programming grows over the coming years our focus areas will include:
- Skating
- Stickhandling
- Shooting
- Defensive skills
- Agility
- Goaltending
- Checking
- Power Skating
Development Programs Our development programs will be designed to cater to the diverse needs of our players. These programs are a blend of in-practice training sessions and separate time slots available by sign-up. This structure ensures that every player wishing to receive personalized attention and opportunities to refine their skills can do so at both Local League and Representative Levels of Competition.
Age-Specific Training We recognize that different age groups require tailored training approaches:
- Under U9: The emphasis is on building a strong skating foundation.
- Over U9: Training includes skating, endurance, positioning, and defensive skating, providing a well-rounded development experience.
Coaching Philosophy Our coaching philosophy is guided by the principles outlined in our Manual of Operations (MOP). We are committed to fostering an environment that promotes skill development, teamwork, sportsmanship, and a love for the game.
Performance Metrics We are in the process of establishing performance metrics to effectively measure and track the progress of our players throughout the season(s). These metrics will help us ensure continuous improvement and success.
Parent Involvement Parents play a crucial role in the development of our players. We encourage parents to:
- Support their player's growth and development.
- Contribute to the success of our development programs by volunteering their time.
- Stay engaged and involved with SMMHA activities.
Additional Resources Throughout the season, we will provide links to valuable player development resources and articles to support continuous learning and improvement.
Support and Partnerships Our programs are supported by dedicated volunteers, company partners, and sponsors who are integral to our success. We are currently developing these partnerships, and placeholders are in place as we finalize these details.
