INFORMATION ON THE NOVICE PROGRAM

Information on our Novice program...

South Muskoka Minor Hockey Association would like to announce and inform parents that the board passed a motion in our August meeting to have a Novice Rep team for the 2019-2020 season.

The concern we have as an Association is the lack of teams surrounding our area that we will have to compete against, however, we are committed and dedicated to the development of our players in the Novice and below program, and would like to see a Rep team at this level to keep those skilled players challenged and improving, if we can.

Parents in this age group whose child may be selected for this team will need to be aware that this will involve more travelling to other centres as it is not likely that many, if any, of the local centres (MPS loop) and associations will have rep teams at this level. This also means that any player selected for the rep team will not be able to play in the local league/house league loop, which again may mean less games locally in our own centres.

With the new implementation from Hockey Canada we are mandated to follow their program outlines so the team may function and run a little different than in past years.

There will be no tryout process with this team but there will be player evaluation ice times where the players will be assessed and ranked and the coaching staff will select the top players to make up the team. As the program will be in its infancy, we would ask that parents be patient with the coaching staff and Association while we determine how the team will be run and structured.

The Minor Novice program (2012 birth year) as mandated by Hockey Canada will be playing in a MPS local league loop with the option of a Minor Novice Select Team as approved by the SMMHA board. More details to follow in September.

We want to do what is in the best interest for all the kids playing hockey in our BB center and continue to seek best practices across the province to learn from and guide us while we embrace and implement the changes mandated to us by Hockey Canada.

We will be hosting a Novice and below BBQ night August 22nd where we will have coaching staff and board members there to answer any questions that parents may have regarding the new programing and where we see the development potential for the players in these levels. We also hope to have some information pamphlets to hand out on that night.

As the Association receives information and updates we will do our best to keep families informed.

In addition, we are actively seeking fundraising and sponsorships for the purchase of cross-ice boards for the Novice and below Program. If you are interested in helping please contact the Equipment Director.

Should you have any immediate concerns please feel free to contact our Association President Stephanie Oates.
