Update on U16 and U18 Team Programming for 2025–2026 Season
South Muskoka Minor Hockey Association News Update May 2, 2025

The South Muskoka Minor Hockey Association (SMMHA) regrets to inform our members that, due to a lack of clear information, direction, and guidance from the Ontario Minor Hockey Association (OMHA) following the initial approval of a U16 team, the Board has made the difficult decision to discontinue plans for the U16 A loop team for the upcoming 2025–2026 season.

We understand this news will be disappointing to families and players who were preparing for U16 tryouts, and we share in that disappointment. The Board’s priority remains ensuring that all players have access to a fair and well-organized hockey program — something we cannot confidently provide for the U16 division this year without the necessary support and structure from our governing body.   As a result, SMMHA will proceed with tryouts for the U18B team as planned. We encourage eligible players to attend and compete for a spot on this roster.

In addition, the viability of a U18D team will be reviewed following a Special Members Meeting, which has been formally requested by several U18 families. This meeting is scheduled for June 2, 2025, and will provide an opportunity for open dialogue and community input on the matter.   We thank all families, players, and volunteers for their patience, understanding, and continued commitment to South Muskoka Minor Hockey. We remain dedicated to offering the best possible hockey experience for our athletes and will provide further updates as they become available.

Sincerely,
The SMMHA Board of Directors
