NorStar Bears Split the Weekend
The NorStar Bears had a couple of tough games this past weekend to tune up before heading to their second tournament of the year next week in Lincoln. The Penetang Flames and Haliburton Storm were not going to lay down though and let the Bears walk away with two W's if they had anything to say about it. The players started a little sluggish in both games but seemed to grow stronger and faster as they wore on and came away with a win and hard fought loss
Saturday saw the team travel to Penetang and quickly fall behind 2-0 before coaches Boyde, Bobbette and McLennan calmed the troops down and had them start fresh in the 2nd period. The players came out flying and quickly get on the board with E. Brown potting an unassisted goal to get the Bears started. J. Chambers followed that up with two straight snipes assisted by the soft hands of B. Clayton and hard work digging the puck loose by their centerman B. MacKinnon. Captain C. Walker came to play and finished off the 4 goal 2nd period burying one on a nice give and go from T. Jennings.
The team didn't stop in the 3rd. L. Downer opened the scoring on the first shift which Penetang quickly answered. Some strong defensive work by G. Cardwell was able to let C. Walker do his best Bobby Orr impersonation going coast to coast to pot his 2nd goal of the game to give the Bears back their 3 goal cushion. Just to be on the safe side, W. Davidson's tenacity along the boards and in front of the net finally paid off with her netting her first goal of the season. The great wall of E. Guthrie turned aside numerous chances by the Flames and our Bears came away with the 7-3 victory.
Sunday saw the Haliburton Storm come to the Bears den looking to renew their long rivalry. Strong draws from C. Carlson, timely saves from T.J Babcock and board work from P. Boyde kept the Bears in it until they could get on the scoresheet in the 3rd. J. Jennings lead rush after rush keeping the pressure on trying to take the lead but unfortunately some bad bounces saw the Storm net two goals late in the frame. C. Walker bulged the twine for his 7th of the season with 30 seconds to go but it just wasn't meant to be with E. Brown just missing a shot as the buzzer sounded.
All in all it was a successful weekend for the NorStar Bears as they were shown that hard work and team work is what's needed to be successful.
