The Fowler Atom Rep Bears had a strong showing in their
third tournament of the year this weekend at the Regional Silver Stick
Tournament in Midland.
The Bears came out flying on Friday against a Collingwood team that had beat the Bears twice in the last three weeks. South Muskoka jumped out to a 2-0 leading early in the second period and lead by strong defensive play, held on for the 2-1 victory.
On Saturday, game two of the tournament put the Bears up against a big and determined Port Perry team that was hungry for a win. It was a very tight back and forth game with the Bears finally putting one in the back of the net late in the second period to go up 1-0. The Bears were able to hold on to the one goal victory with a strong shutout performance by goaltender Mitchell Webb. This victory put the Fowler Atom team as the only team in Group B with two wins.
Game three was against a very strong Whitby team that knew they needed a win to move on. After an early goal as a result of a generous bounce off the boards to a Whitby forward and a late goal in the first period, the Bears were down 2-0 after the first period. The Bears were able to hang tough through the rest of the game, again with a great effort from Mitchell Webb in goal, but a late third period ended the game with a 3-0 loss for the Bears.
The South Muskoka Fowler Atom team finished the group play tied with Whitby and Collingwood with 4 points for each team at the top of the standings for group B. However due to goal differential, the Bears finished third in the group and missed moving on to the semi-finals despite a very strong performance in all three games.
