Regulations

The Team’s Final roster and OMHA Travel Permit must be emailed to [email protected] two weeks prior to the start of the tournament and each team must have copies on hand for the duration of the tournament.                          

Each team’s head coach or manager must report to the registration desk one hour prior to game time for registration. 

Tournament Playing Rules

 

1. Hockey Canada and OMHA rules will apply, except for the added rules/conditions as detailed below.

2. To be eligible to play in the Tournament, a player must appear on the tournament roster submitted by each team.  Players must be registered with OMHA.

3. The 2017-2018 OMHA minimum suspensions list will be strictly enforced. Additional suspensions may be imposed at the discretion of the Tournament Director.

4. Suspension(s) of player(s), coaching staff, managers, trainers, etc. will be served in the tournament.  Major and Match Penalties will be reported to the OMHA rep and may be required to carry over into regular season play following the tournament.

5. Teams are required to bring two sets of sweaters.  The Home team will wear light sweaters and the Visitor team will wear dark sweaters. In case of conflicting sweater colours, the designated "Home Team" will change.

6. Atom & PeeWee game lengths will be 10-10-10 during the round robin & semi-finals. The championship final games will be 10-10-15

7. A maximum of 19 players are allowed per team.  A player can only play for one team during the tournament.

8. The 3-minute warm-up clock will commence when the ice resurfacing gate is closed.  Teams must be ready to commence play after the buzzer sounds at the end of the 3 minute warm-up.  The clock will start immediately following the end of the warm up.

9. Teams must be prepared to go on the ice 30 minutes before the scheduled game time.

10. No time outs will be allowed during Round Robin games.  One time out is allowed during the semi-final and championship final games per team and will be 30 seconds in length.

11. Mercy Rule:If there is a 5 or more goal differential between teams at any time during the third period of any round robin game, the remainder of the game shall be played as straight time even if the goal differential becomes less than 5. After the commencement of straight time, minor penalties will be 3 minutes in duration and majors will be 7 minutes. Minor penalties assessed during straight time will be adjusted to 2 minutes for tie breaker purposes and majors to 5 minutes. For the semi-final and championship games only, the clock will not stop until the goal differential becomes less than 5 goals at which point it will revert back to stop time.

12. The score clock will not show more than a 5 goal differential.  

13. Stick penalties - high-sticking, cross-checking, slashing, butt-ending and spearing will be called closely.  A player receiving 3-stick penalties in a game will automatically receive a game ejection.

14. Any fighting penalties will result in immediate suspension, of the player(s) involved from the tournament.

15. Tie breaker formula for the Playoff and Championship Games shall be as stated in the following section.

16. Flooding of the ice will occur at the end of each game.

17. SMMHA will not be responsible for any injuries incurred during the duration of the tournament.  All precautions will be taken to protect participants.

18. In the event that the TOTAL number of penalty infractions assessed to both teams, combined, EXCEEDS 24 infractions (not minutes) the clock will operate on run time for the remainder of the game.

19. Champions and Finalists of the championship game will receive awards. Each team will pick their own MVP for each game except the consolation and championship games which you will pick the other team. MVP medals will be handed to the manager prior to each game when they fill out game sheet.

20. Referees on ice decisions are final.

21. Any of the rules and regulations may be changed or altered at the discretion of the Tournament Director. The TOURNAMENT OFFICIAL(S) decision(s) will be final and there will be no appeal process.

22. PeeWee Teams are guaranteed three (3) games in a Round Robin format with a possible 4th or 5thin the finals. Atom teams are guaranteed (4) games with a possible 5th or 6th in the finals.

23. All decisions of the SMMHA Tournament Director, or in his/her absence a SMMHA board member, are final.

24. Games will be played in Gravenhurst and Bracebridge arenas.

 


TIE BREAKER FORMULA

In the event that teams are tied during round robin play, the following procedure will be used to rank teams.

1.                  If a two way tie, then the winner of the game between the two teams.

 

2.                 For PeeWee if still tied then the team with the highest percentage will move on. For Atom, is this conflicts then GF/Total goals (GF+GA)

 

3.             If still tied then the team with the lowest total penalty minutes, including a mercy rule adjustment. If there is a 3 minute penalty during run time then it is put back to a 2 minute penalty in the calculation.

 

4.                  If a three way tie then the team with the highest resultant from GF/(GF+GA)

 

5.                  If still tied, then the team with the lowest total penalty minutes.

 


 SEMI-FINAL AND CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES

The highest-ranking team in the Round Robin will be designated the HOME team for playoff games. 

Each team will be allowed one 30 second time-out during each playoff game.

Player Substitutions in Overtime for both Divisions:  Substitutions are allowed at any time (during play and during stoppages in play).

If overtime is required to determine a winner, the overtime format below will be used.

1.      First overtime: For 5 minutes, teams will play 4 on 4 with goalies. If this does not result in a winner then;

2.      Second overtime: For 5 minutes, teams will play 3 on 3 with goalies. If 2 periods of overtime does not result in a winner, a shoot-out will occur.

SHOOT-OUT RULE:

1. Shoot-outs only apply in Semi-Final and Championship games.

2. Each coach will appoint three players as shooters.

3. Shooters will alternate with the home team beginning first.

4. If one team scores on its first 2 shots and the other team does not score any goals on its first 2 shots, then the third shooter is not necessary.

5.If still tied after 3 shooters, the Coaches will appoint another shooter, then it becomes a sudden-death shoot-out. The first team to score when the other team does not, shall be the winner.

6. No shooter may repeat until all skaters have taken their turn.

7. Shooters must maintain the order of the first round if a second round is necessary.

8. All applicable sections of the CHA Penalty Shot rule shall apply during shoot-outs.

Penalties: The non-penalized team adds a player. At the end of the penalty, the penalized player enters the ice. At next stoppage teams return to 4 on 4. Any player with a penalty at the end of the overtime is not available for the shootout no matter the length of the shootout.

Overtime Special Conditions:

Time-outs:  An additional 30 second time-out for each team will be provided for each overtime period excluding the shoot-out.

Awards Presentation:

Game MVP’s will be given out in the dressing room following each game. Championship final award presentations (including game MVP’s) for both divisions will be on the ice after the championship games. Spectators are not permitted on the ice at any time.
