BRACEBRIDGE - It’s been over 50 years since the Bracebridge Kinsmen Juvenile C won the 1960-61 all-Ontario championship cup, but the former players and members still remember that season.

Several of them met recently at the South Muskoka Golf and Curling Club where they shared stories, photos and memories.

“It makes you feel old,” said former manager Allen Taylor laughing.

There are a few things they said they miss from those days. Some said they miss the team, and the camaraderie, and they all said they miss their old coach and Kinsmen, Chub Downey, who passed away a year ago.

Conversations quickly came back to the final game in the playoffs when the team took Watford on home ice. It was a sold-out game that resulted in an overtime win and many happy Bracebridge fans.

While Muskoka still remains a proud hockey town, some things have changed since the former players won that game.

“I think it costs a lot more money to play hockey today then it did then,” said Taylor.

Which is another reason the team got together.

They wanted to make a donation to South Muskoka Minor Hockey.

“It started because we had this anniversary and get-together, and when Chub, the coach, passed away, we had some money saved and decided to donate it in his name to minor hockey,” Taylor said.

“What we asked for this year was that it be used to support equipment for needy kids.”

Some of the players said if it wasn’t for generosity of others they would not have been able to play.

“Some of us would never have played hockey without the Kinsmen, and our team would never have gone on,” said former player Ben Mann.

The players also said the Kinsmen were responsible for bringing minor hockey to Bracebridge.
