Lincoln Tournament:
The Muskoka Aircraft Refinishing Atom Bears travelled to Lincoln, Ontario for their first away tournament of the year.

South Muskoka played their first game against the Dorchester Dragons.  Both teams were evenly matched resulting in a hard fought game from both sides.  The Dragons opened the scoring, but Mitch Hammond used his speed to create a break-away goal after a nice pass from Kale Rogers to tie it up.  It was back and forth the rest of the game with one more goal from Mitch from Ty Crockford, and Brock Fry, Ewan Davis and Graydon Guthrie all finding the back of the net.  Player of the Game honours went to Mitch Hammond.  Day 1 ended with the Bears earning a point for the 5-5 tie.

Most teams do dry land training, but the Bears took advantage of their hotel location to do some wet land training, taking 18 people to the water park for an afternoon of water slides, wave pools and more!

Saturday morning the Bears were back on the ice to face the Paris Wolfpack.  Again the Bears were evenly matched and played a strong offensive and defensive game.  Two goals from Graydon and one from Brock on assists from Ewan, Nolan Quesnelle and Mitchell Pate helped the Bears earn a 3-3 tie.  Ben Armstrong came up huge making a big save in the dying seconds of the game to preserve the point and keep the Bears in the championship hunt.  Euan Greenfield and Phoenix Atkinson-Tripp made a great defensive team to help Phoenix earn Player of the Game.

The Muskoka Aircraft Refinishing Atom Bears sent four players to the skills competition.  Brock Fry, Mitch Hammond, Graydon Guthrie and Ben Armstrong all did us proud representing the Bears in the “Most Accurate Shooter,”  “Fastest Skater,” “Break-Away Challenge” and “Best Goalie” categories. Brock came second in the accurate shooter and Graydon won the break-away challenge.

Strong play in the first two games earned the Bears a spot in the semi-finals and a rematch against the home team, Lincoln Blades whom the Bears had faced in their own home tournament.  Although the Bears were hungry for revenge, it was not to be this time.  The Blades came out fast and furious and the Bears tried to contain them creating some great scoring chances, but the Blades goalie kept turning them away.  Graydon put one away on an assist from Brock to break up the shut-out, as the Bears came out on the short end of a 5-1 game.  Alex Clayton was able to get the puck in deep and strong back checking from Parker McAdams helped keep the Bears in the game.  Sebastian Stephen, always rock solid on defense was a very deserving Player of the Game.

Although we didn’t come away with an official title, the team should be proud of the way they represented South Muskoka Minor Hockey.  Great team play and hard work is what marks this team as something special.  Way to go Bears!
