MPS CHAMPIONS!
This weekend was the annual MPS tournament to decide who the local champions would be for the 2014-2015 season.
The PWS Midget Bears started off the weekend with a very tight 4-3 win over The Muskoka Rock. It took an overtime goal to win the game. As always the Muskoka Rock played the Bears very tough but it was also an indication of the Rock's stellar play yet to come this weekend.
Saturday morning saw a preview of 1st round OMHA play downs in the form of the Huntsville Otters. This game was not a high scoring affair but the Bears still managed a convincing 3-0 shut-out. Lets hope this story-line continues in the 1st round of play downs!
Saturday afternoon was a game vs the always tough Parry Sound Shamrocks. In the last meeting of these teams this year, the Bears left little doubt who was the better team dusting the Shamrocks 4-1.
Due to their great play all weekend, the Muskoka Rock whose only loss was against the Bears, had their well-earned chance at revenge and local bragging rights in the Championship game. They came out ready to play and the Rock took an early one goal lead. The Bears answered quickly however and added a few more. But the Rock clawed back a few times. Perhaps the defining moment in the game was a shorthanded goal by Sye Ellard who on the same shift broke his stick, quickly grabbed a team-mate's stick from the bench and then charged down the ice and wired a shot past a very good Rock goalie... popping the water bottle into the air to leave no doubt that it went in. The game finished 5-3 for the Bears. The team played great hockey this weekend and every player deserves credit for that. Congrats to the Rock who played inspired hockey all weekend... and of course to the Bears who confirmed they are the undisputed local Champions!
The Bears have a tune-up exhibition game VS the Orillia Terriers before starting their play-downs VS Huntsville. Stay tuned and come out to watch some fantastic hockey featuring the best of our local Midget aged talent!
